Small Building Automation - Where do you start? (Part I)

Small Building Automation - Where do you start? (Part I)
Unless you already have an automation need the biggest bang for the savings buck in automation is almost always HVAC, followed by Lighting Control in which the two are typically 70% of the building's energy usage.

Building Automation Communications - how do buildings talk?

Managing equipment of various types, usages and manufacturers is all but impossible if they don't speak the same language. Large equipment manufacturers had to create a communications protocol for their own devices to talk to their system controllers, and did not team up with another manufacturers to create a common language because this forced customers to buy only their equipment. Eventually a group of engineers got together and created BACnet under the guidance of ASHRAE. Today BACnet is the unofficial common standard for communications in buildings.

Building Automation Systems - One size does not fit all.

There was a time that when I thought of Building Automation I thought of the Sears Towers and other large landmarks with millions of square feet in automated spaces.  That was where you first saw Building Automation Systems (BAS) because you had to be able to cost justify the high costs of the automation, and the only place it made financial sense was in the largest spaces. Over time BAS costs came down, the technology got better, the installers honed their craft and the size of buildings that could justify the cost came down.
